The Student Success Center (SSC) was established in 1984. The Writing Center, as it was then known, had a staff of three. Since then, many more services and staff members have been added, and support now extends far beyond the English department.
The SSC is located on the first floor of Thompson Hall. It provides academic support to all Citadel students, both undergraduate and graduate, through the following programs.
- Athletic Academic Services
- Academic Coaching
- Mathematics Lab
- Services for Students with Disabilities
- Subject-Area Tutoring
- Supplemental Instruction (SI)
- Writing Lab
The staff is comprised of professional tutors, graduate assistants, undergraduate students, and full-time personnel. Students may set up an appointment by emailing the SSC at firstname.lastname@example.org, calling (843) 953-5305, or stopping by 117 Thompson Hall.
Individual tutorials in writing for academic projects across the curriculum are offered by the SSC. Individual and group subject-area tutorials are also available in most academic areas, including but not limited to Mathematics, Science, Foreign Language, History, Psychology and Business Administration. Learning strategies tutorials in areas such as study skills, time management and test-taking skills are also available.
In the summer of 2011, the National College Learning Center Association (NCLCA) chose The Citadel Student Success Center as the recipient of the Frank L. Christ Outstanding Learning Center Award. This honor is a testament to the hard work of the fifty plus tutors and four full-time administrators who now make up the staff of the SSC and clearly indicates the vital role this resource plays in The Citadel community.
