Prospective Undergraduate Students
The School of Humanities and Social Sciences is home to more than sixty tenured or tenure-track professors. They are known for being excellent teachers, active scholars, and conscientious advisers. Many of them have received special awards in each of those areas. Many others have been elected to high offices in professional and civic organizations. The talent and dedication of the faculty are the main reasons why The Citadel, in the opinion of U.S. News and World Report, is the No. 1 best value among Southern colleges and the No. 2 best public institution in the South among those offering up to a master's degree.
Undergraduates come from 46 states, the District of Columbia, and 26 foreign countries. There are approximately 750 Humanities and Social Sciences undergraduates. Currently, the most popular majors within the School are (in descending order) Criminal Justice, Political Science, History, English, Psychology and Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures. Many students pursue minors in other departments within the School. At the moment, the three most popular minors are Spanish, German and French.
All entering freshmen are enrolled in "Citadel 101" which orients them to academic life at the college. The first two years of study within the school are centered on a core curriculum that exposes all students to the fundamentals of major fields of knowledge and develops their skills in research, critical thinking, and writing. The last two years provide specialized study within the major and the opportunity to use a large number of general electives to develop either a formal minor or a pre-professional concentration of courses prior to graduation.
