A native of Florence and Ocean Drive Beach, South Carolina, LTC Pamela Barton graduated from the University of South Carolina. She received a direct commission into the United States Army in 1974 as a 2LT and was branched into the Signal Corps.

LTC Barton earned an MBA with concentration in Computer Science from Webster University and completed 30 hours of doctoral work in Applied Management also at Webster.

Her military education includes the Signal Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, the US Army Airborne and Jumpmaster Schools, the US Army Logistics Executive Development Course, the Armed Forces Staff College, the Command and General Staff College, and the Belgian Paracommando Course.

In a military career that spanned 28 years, LTC Barton's key assignments included the 18th Airborne Corps, 50th Signal Battalion [Airborne], and 35th Signal Brigade, Ft. Bragg, as a Platoon Leader, Assistant S3-Operations Officer, and Company Commander; the United States Military Academy; Supreme Allied Headquarters, Mons, Belgium, as Junior Aide to General Alexander Haig; 3rd Infantry Division, Wurzburg, Germany, as Special Assistant to the Division Commander; 123d Signal Battalion, Leighton Barracks, Germany, as the Battalion S4-Logistics; 310 TAACOM, Washington, DC, as a Logistics Systems Manager; 120th Army Reserve Command, St. Louis, Missouri, as Director of Tactical and Solider Skill Training and Qualification; and Small Group Instructor, US Army Professional Development, Combined Arms and Staff College, Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas. During her service time LTC Barton amassed over 500 military and sport parachute jumps and appeared with the 82d Airborne Sport Parachute Demonstration Team.

In 1999 LTC Barton joined the Commandant's Department at The Citadel as a Company TAC (Teach-Advise-Coach) Officer. Over several years she served in 1st, 3rd and 4th Battalions. In 2005 she was selected The Citadel's Employee of the Year. LTC Barton was promoted to her current position as the Assistant Commandant for Operations & Training in November 2006.

LTC Barton resides on James Island with her husband, LTC [Ret] Steve Barton. They have two daughters, Michelle and Stephane. Both LTC Barton and her daughter, Stephane, are cancer survivors.
