 COVID- 19 Internship Update

Student safety, health, and well-being is a priority.  For both academic and non-academic internships, students should be aware of the evolving communication coming from The Citadel and follow CDC/Citadel guidelines when considering action. 

  • Students must communicate with internship sites and faculty advisors regarding adjusting schedules and internship requirements.
  • For issues related to safety and liability, students are not to report to an internship site if the CDC/Citadel instructs them not to.
  • We encourage communication with faculty advisors regarding adjusting requirements for students who may be unable to complete internship hours due to the evolving situation with COVID-19.

READ THE ELIGIBILITY CHECKLIST BELOW. Then, complete The Citadel's Internship Agreement Form and return to faculty advisor. The form includes:

  1. Student, Faculty Advisor & Site Information
  2. Internship Description and Learning Objectives
  3. Leave Request (approved by faculty advisor & submitted in CAS by department)
  4. Legal Agreement with Waiver of Liability & Indemnity 
  5. Signatures of Site Supervisor, Faculty Advisor, and Student

Internships offer hands-on practical experience. They give students opportunities to gain "valuable, applied experience and make connections in professional careers fields they are considering. They give employers the opportunity to guide and evaluate talent.” -  NACE

Internships for academic credit are (typically) for academic juniors and seniors, with some exceptions (see department advisors).


  • Cadet internships cannot interfere with LTPs - Tues./Thurs. or Fri. parade (see White Book for exceptions)
  • Student has 2.5 minimum GPA, has approval from academic department regarding eligibility (and in identifying academic integrity of internship), and is at a place in academic studies where the academic department encourages internships (typically Jr./Sr with some exceptions)
  • Student is able to commit a minimum of 10 hrs weekly (during fall/spring semester) at least 2-3 days or hours agreed upon by academic advisor; "contact hours" are typically 90 hrs/16 weeks or 10 week summer session. Most internship courses are 3 academic credit hours
  • Student has spoken to academic advisor or desiginated faculty member
  • Student secures an internship independantly, through The Career Center, or from a referal from department advisor
  • Student registers for internship course and completes Internship Agreement Forms 
  • Special circumstances are referred to the Career Center.
